I lived in Iowa until August 2008 and then moved to Missouri. I was a remote employee (home office) until December 1 for a company based in Kansas. What state do i pay taxes in? For the last month of 2008 i changed to an active employee and drove to the Kansas campus from Missouri - do i just pay for one month of Kansas taxes? This is confusing.

The answer to your question is determined by state law, as to what state you would file in when you move between states during a tax year. You may need to file in all of them.

Most states have a "partial year resident form", used for this purpose.

You must contact each state you lived in, understand their laws on your filing requirment.

Most states have websites on the internet, and you can find their dept of revenue or taxation from these sites, view forms and instructions, to help you file. They will usually have a phone no, and often times an 800 number for out of state dialing. This should help you determine your state(s), filing requirements.

As a general rule, which may differ depending upon the state,
1. Income while in Iowa, report to Iowa.
2. Income while driving to Kansas, report to Kansas. Attach letter from employer that from Jan 08 to Nov 08, you were not present in Kansas to earn the income.
2. Income after Sept 08 (when you moved to Missouri) report to Missouri. Claim credit for taxes paid to Kansas.
