I am an international student who attended the school in NCSU and worked on campus.
I did summer internship in CA.
I have filled the 1040 NR-EZ form for federal returns and 540 NR (short ) form for CA state tax . However I am facing problems in filling the D 400 state tax return form for NC. I have the following questions :
1) Was I a resident of NC for the entire year or a partyear resident of NC ?
2) On line 35 of the form D 400 they are asking about the personal exemption adjustment which for single filling is $1000. Does this apply to F1 students also?
3) Nowhere in the D400 form for NC they are asking me about NC wages (unlike in the CA state tax form they ask for the CA wages).
All the calculations in form D 400 are being done on federal income ( which includes my CA income also)

Thanks a lot for the help!

1) You were NEITHER; as an international student, by law, you are a NON-resident of NC and CA.

2) Yes.

3) Report ONLY the NC wages on the NC return and CA wages on the CA return.
