Does not matter what the interest is on, you CANNOT claim interest paid in 2006 on your 2008 tax return.

Does not matter what the interest is on, you CANNOT claim interest paid in 2006 on your 2008 tax return.

However, you CAN file an amended return for tax year 2006 - that's form 1040X. You have 3 years from the date of your original 2006 tax return to file an amended return and get a refund back - so that gives you untill April 15, 2010 to file the amended return.

Only certain types of interest paid are deductible for tax purposes (typically mortgage interest and investment interest).
