Hi,
I am a foreigner and have never lived in the US. I received an inheritance from my Aunt who was an American citizen. They paid out about 60% of the funds, the rest were withheld. Now I received a 1042-S that documents all of this. Is there any way for me to collect the withheld funds? Should I, as a foreigner, be made to pay US taxes?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Quick update. I don't have an SS number or TIN.
Do i need to file taxes in the states?
Thanks

Form 1042 is for U.S. source "income". An inheritance is not income. Was there income earned by her estate that was allocated to you? Are you from a country that has a treaty with the U.S.?

There is no tax on inheritances.
Any income earned by your aunt's estate is taxable.
Can you give more details about 1042-S? What is in which box?

Thanks
The 1042 states about 20K in box2 "gross income" and it states 6K in both boxes 7 and 9, "Federal tax withheld and total withholding credit".
It was an inheritance, I'm not sure from what kind of account other than it being under the Ameriprise umbrella.
Any help with this would be appreciated.
