My sister husband was and office who died in the line of duty. His death was deemed work related, therefore, she receives monthly checks from the workers' Comp division of her husband job titled death benefit.

Well, they end up sending her a 1099-misc, with the total amount reported in box 8. We were under the impression that this money was tax free, but if not, how does she report this income on her taxes. Can anyone assist with this question? Any help would be most appreciated

I do not think you have the right box cited.

Box #8 is for "substitute payments in lieu of dividends or interest".

Most likely, it is box #3, which is "other income", which is reported on Line #21 of Form 1040.
