Hi all

i’m 24 years old and studying accounting and finance (this is my third year) i’m currently revising for 2 retakes and this is my last chance at this. If I mess up this time then i’m on my bike basically.

I don’t know what to do

If I dont get the degree in accounting, will it mean that I wont be able to go up the career ladder because of the lack of qualification and can't earn more than £16000 (money is an issue for me at the mo).


I have experience in accounting as i’ve worked in a few accounting firms so if know I can get my foot in the door.

But i’m really worried that I wont be able to get up the career ladder (accounts technician, chartered accountant etc) if I don’t pass the degree.

Well first off I am not in England but the US, although I am afraid the answer would be the same either way.

It is going to be hard to move up in the accounting world without your degree. You have experience so you should be able to get a job, it just might not be the job you want and climbing any corporate latter without a degree will be very difficult. Furthermore, without the degree you will eventually hit a ceiling where you will be unable to rise to higher positions without the degree.

Not sure what the requirements are for a CA in the UK. Here in the US we have a CPA (basically the same thing) and you have to have a degree to get that. In fact most states now require a master’s degree to take the CPA exam.

I would say don’t give up, study hard, do all your homework, stay after class for additional help, whatever you need to do to do well in your courses. I think you can do it… you need to motivate yourself.
