mexcelaya Mar 2, 2009, 06:36 PM well i just wanted to know because i think it can mean different things like tall, fat.... and so on. wats your opinion darkvision Mar 2, 2009, 07:18 PM it really depends on context if your looking at a 6' 8" guy and say he is big....its connotation is tall. if your looking at a 450 pound 5' nothing women its fat or in that case morbidly obese. in essence big describes something with extra ordinary dimensions in one form or another. and is generally related to either a personal or societal view. by this what i mean is i may consider someone fat that you would consider pudgy, or vice versa. as well a table might be big to a child but average or even small sized for an adult. it all depends on personal experience what its said about and any other number of factors that determine what any word in the english language(or any other language for that matter) means. mexcelaya Mar 2, 2009, 07:25 PM oh because i got a friend in school that is 6'1'' and 245 lb and people say hes big but he feels bad i dont know why i mean he does' nt look that FAT Clough Mar 3, 2009, 12:08 AM Hi again, mexcelaya! As alluded to in the post by darkvision, "big" is a matter of perspective and definition. Your friend in school might not look fat, but perhaps others are correct in saying that he's big. Just saying someone is big doesn't mean that they're fat or even a put-down. It's a matter of perspective and definition and can be very subjective as far as the interpretation as to what is big is concerned. Why specifically does he feel bad, please? Thanks! mexcelaya Mar 3, 2009, 05:13 AM he feels everyone is telling him that's he s fat darkvision Mar 3, 2009, 11:12 AM he feels everyone is telling him that's he s fat Firstly sometimes that can be merely his self esteem, though in my experiences your "gut" feeling is generally correct. so if its other kids(not his friends) calling him big, they probably do mean it in a derogatory sense. The only advice i can give on that is this: ignore it. It can be hard, and it certainly doesnt make you feel good to be put down on(it happened a lot to me in school but meh). Your friend needs to realize that in the end only one persons opinion matters. His. If he feels he is fat, then he can go on a diet, eat less work out etc. If he doesnt feel that he is fat or "big", then who gives a damn what others might say. :) mexcelaya Mar 3, 2009, 11:16 AM yea that's what i keep telling him oh and the kids that tell him that they r his friends Copyright ©2005-, Ask Me Help Desk
