I Have an old American Standard one handle shower only valve (approx 40 yrs old). I bought a repair kit from a plumbing parts store consisting of valve seats, o-rings compresto install the repair kit?sion springs, etc. Can I gain access to the valve from the shower, or do I have to cut a hole in the wall to access the back of the valve? Do I need any special tools

Would you be able to give us the model number or post a picture, most of the parts can be replaced from the front side don't need to get to the back, just need to remove the handle and the cover plate to get access to the seals, Thanks.

Hi all...

Like John suggested, all you should need to do is shut off the water, remove the handle, remove the trim plate, and then begin to disassemble the valve from the front. You will only need to access the valve from behind if you have to replace the entire valve... and even then if you buy a "remodeler's plate" you can actually change the valve from the front as well!

If, after removing the screw from the handle you cannot remove the handle then you may need a HANDLE PULLER (about $10.00 at home depot)... see picture. You will definitely need a seat wrench to remove the seats... see picture. Otherwise, basic hand tools should do it for you.

Let us know if you have any difficulties... ;)
