How to remove shower valve american standard

Need more information.
What is the model number, is it a single handle, or 2 handle?
Do you want to change the valve or the cartridge assy, and why do you want to change it?

It is a single handle. Not sure of the specific model (we just bought the house), but in looking at replacement parts, I pretty sure it is the "Jasmine" line. I am only replacing the trim.

I took off the outer ring with the two long screws and then unscrewed the "hex set screw" from the handle itself, but the handle will not come off the valve assembly.

I don't want to pull too hard, but I don't see any other screws or clips that may be holding it on.

There are three screws that look to be holding the handle assembly to the valve itself, but I couldn't get to them because they are behind the collar that sits between the outer ring and handle.

My local hardware store doesn't have this type of fixture, so before I order a $180 replacement, I wanted to make sure I was ordering the right one, by removing the one I have and matching the parts.

Even though the set screw has been removed, the handle still works fine. I really thought it would simply come right off, once the set screw was removed.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. The only information I can find on American Standards web site is more of how to replace the valve assembly or how to rough in for a new install.

Mine looks very similar to the Reliant 3 with the round escutcheon, but my handle looks more like the Colony Soft model. The Jasmine may not be the one I have, since I have the two long screws holding the escutcheon plate on and their documentation shows the holes, but not the screws (like the Colony soft and Reliant do). I guess I would need to know if these trim kits are interchangeable also?

Again, this looks pretty straight forward with all the models. The set screw under the handle should be what separates the hadle from the end of the valve assembly, but it doesn't.

Here's an example of an assembly and the parts involved. It looks like it's all about the set screw on the handle, but unless mine is stuck because of hard water corrosion or something, it doesn't make sense.

You have done an excellent job so far that you went to web sight and found the links, there is nothing else to hold the handle in place but the set screw, Iwould suggest to apply some WD-40 on the set screw and let it soak for a few minutes and try a correct allen wrench try to remove the set screw, it has worked for me severla time, good luck.

Thanks John, but that's the problem. The set screw is out and the handle will not come off.

I will take you up on your suggestion though and squirt some WD40 up the hole that the set screw came out of and see if I can loosen the handle that way.

Sorry I missed that the set screw is removed in your post #3, yes try WD-40 and leave it soaked for a few minutes and try it use a little extra force hope it will come out, can you please post a picture of it as Milo requested he may have an idea he is the expert, Thanks.

Well... guess I'm a whimp. Once the set screw is removed, work the handle back and forth and side to side.

It was simply hard water from 5 years of well water.

Do you want to go further ? You can actually buy new trim for this faucet making it look like new...

So far you have done a great job, Shut off the water to the house remove the two screws as I have marked for you in the picture and remove the trim plate and replace it for a good look as Milo says if you want to replace the cartridge remove the cover and the cartridge, good luck.

That's the plan. I wanted to get the darn thing apart to see what replcement part(s) I needed.

I'm a little embarrest with the pic. We have still not found a good product to remove the hard water stains we inherited when we bought the house.

I ordered a Jasmine T808.500.299 Chrome/Brass trim kit, with an R120 rough valve. I hope their the correct parts.

Although the pics don't show the trim ring removed; that was the easy part. I got that off the first attempt. Then when I removed the collar and set screw, the handle was obviously corroded with hard water and that began my frustration.

I guess sine I have you... can you reasure me that the rough valve and trim kit will work? I'm a little concerned that the Jasmine does not look to have screws to hold the escutcheon plate on. The R120 looks to correct since the front off my valve has the same three screw configuration. If you know of a good product for hard water removal, that would be great also.

Hello Dan,

If you remove the escutcheon plate and take it to a plumbing supply I am sure they will come up with a matching Plate, also I have used some scotch bright for minor hard water stain and worked for me, if you really want to get the correct plate call the American Standard at 800-442-1902 and they will send you the correct parts, also wait for Milo he will pop in and lets see what does he recommends, Thanks.

Thanks John. I'm a pretty impatient person, so I only checked at my local Home Depot and Lowe's and neither had the plate. So I picked one out on line. I'm assuming that even if the Jasmine plate doesn't have screws, it must have a way for the collar to attach to the valve body.

Hopefully designerplumbingoutlet.com has a good return policy if I screwed up!

I'm not too worried, since after looking at the condition of my valve, I also purchased the R120 rough valve which American Standard says will work with the Jasmine plate I picked.

We'll see. I really didn't think it would be this much FUN!

I am also looking to get the replacement Trim kit in Satin Nicole color, Can any body Help. Mine is the same one as shown in the above picture same chrome color,I think it is American Standard Reliant 1495 model
