I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I know someone will put it where it belongs if it isn't.:D
We are in a house that is 5 yrs old, have a forced air gas furnace. We had the ducts cleaned in November hoping that it would help control the dust in the house. It hasn't reduced the amount of dust on our furniture at all! I could dust every day if I felt like it, now I dust every 2nd or 3rd day (and I don't feel like doing it then either:o) We have wall to wall carpet on the bedroom level and hardwood and ceramic tile on the main living level. We also have 2 cats.
(My husband would love for you to tell me to get rid of the cats but it's DUST I am talking about NOT cat hair!)
Is there a problem with the furnace??

Dust,animal dander, whatever is a pain. Have your carpets professionally cleaned since much of those goodies are in the carpet to start with. I have a movie over at the university that shows one person walking on wall to wall in one sunny room. Every step was a cloud of dust that you could not normally see without the special lighting. A good quality air filter will also help. The cheap air filters only capture large dust bunnys and are worthless.

I was going to suggest getting a HEPA filter for the furance and change it out every 3 months. This will definitely help the dust problem and/or eliminate the dust problem. Look for the kind of HEPA disposable furnace filters that say the filter takes out over 90% of the dust, pollen, etc. I have an electric furnace and until I started using these filters I had dust. Now I dust once a week.

Only reason to blame furnace would be filter selection. Other than that, it is all about housekeeping. Clean carpets, as hvac suggested. Keep windows and doors closed during summer months(to help keep dust out of house). Do you live in the city or in the country. If you live in a dirt surrounded area, dust is going to be a constant problem. You may look into an electronic filtration system. i would suggest loosing the cats too, but that would make me a hypocrit, and my wife would cut my balls if she heard me say that. Anyway, i would look into better filter system for you furnace and see what happens.

Thanks folks. We have the only kind of filter on the furnace that is recommended. I guess we'll have to look into a better filtration system. We do live across the street from new construction but it's winter and the doors and windows are kept closed plus they aren't moving any dirt at this time of year.

Its pretty standard for men to like dogs, and women to like cats. Not sure why, but i like both. In reality, they are all a pain, but love em like family. And they seem to keep the kids entertained.
