Should you get the vaccine if you already have HPV (Human Pappilloma Virus (http://www.fda.gov/WOMENS/getthefacts/hpv.html))?

The vaccine will not treat or cure HPV. It may help people who have one type of HPV from being infected with the other types. For example, if you have type 6, it may protect you from getting type 16.

Although HPV infection is common, cancer eventually develops in only a small percentage of infected patients. Other factors almost certainly act with HPV to produce cervical cancer, including:

1. Cigarette smoking

2. Long-term use of oral contraceptives (more than 5 years)

3. Young age at first intercourse

4. Having multiple sexual partners

5. Having non-HPV sexually transmitted diseases.

Hope this helps you.
