The outside compressor on my Tappan 3 ton heat pump failed due to a short. After the new compressor was installed, the freon line began vibrating so much that it is rattling in the walls and the inside unit vibrates too. The technician lowered the amount of freon, which reduced the amount of vibration of the inside unit, but the rattling continues in the wall. He installed an anti-vibration device outside but that did not help. He said there is already a "muffler" on the outside unit.

Any ideas as to the casue and possible solution. The local HVAC company and factory rep have no solution yet.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Mark:)

First of all you just cannot lower the amount of Refrigerant (freon) in the line. The amount has to be calculated and is not adjustable or the performance of the unit will suffer. Never trade off efficiency for noise it is a bad deal and cost you $$$ in higher utility bills.

The noise problem is a on site situation. There has to be a cure but the vibration eliminator is a start. They might have to re-route the lines or change the style of mounts if they used any in the wall.

If this unit did not make noise before I would take a close look at a compressor problem. Just because it is a new compressor does not mean it could be the cause of the vibration/pulsation.
