Our natural gas heater is in our attic. A few days ago when I went up to the attic to take some stuff up to storage, I noticed a faint natural gas odor at the top of my attic steps (which are very close to the furnace). After a few seconds I could not smell it anymore and thought that maybe I was just being paranoid. The furnace has been working fine, mostly just coming on at night as it is not extremely cold yet. Again today when I went up to the attic with some stuff I smelled it again, and again in a few seconds could not notice it anymore. The attic is usually closed off from the rest of the house, as these are pull-down steps. I do no smell the odor anywhere else in the house. My husband says he does not smell it, but I know the smell was there on both occasions.

Do gas companies come check suspected leaks out for free? I would love to have a problem confirmed before I call a technician. (Money is tight.)

It is possible gas companys will check for a leak for free. (I am suprised you did not call the gas company to find out since we have no idea what your gas company does.)

Money is never a issue when you have a gas leak or suspected gas leak. Your home can blow up weather or not you have money.

Sometimes the truth hurts and I will never feel bad about getting someones attention when a very serious condition exists. Could be the next time there is a emergency of this nature you will not waste time by posting on a board such as this. The message that was sent you was intentional so hopefully you learn a lesson expecially about gas leaks that can get worse in a minute and blow up your home with you in it.
