when pressing button down on a gas valve of residential boiler I hear no gas while trying to light pilot, does this mean a new gas valve is needed?

It means that no gas is comming out of the pilot. Carefully disconnect the 1/4 inch aluminum pilot tube from the gas valve then press to test. If gas comes out then the pilot is plugged up and will need to be CAREFULLY cleaned. If no gas come out then it could be the gas is not turned on to the home oR a gas valve somewhere is turned off. Last choice is the gas valve on the boiler is defective. They do not go bad that often.
