We live out of state and just heard of an unfortunate passing of a loved one. We would like to send flowers to the family. The viewing at the funeral home is on Sunday. As most of you are aware, most florists are closed on Sunday's. Do I order them to be delivered on Saturday and let the funeral home hold them for the next day OR should I send them to the Church where a Catholic Burial Service is being done on Monday?

First off, I'm sorry to hear about your family member.

Am I right in saying that the funeral isn't for a week? That seems like a rather long time, but maybe things are handled differently where you live, than I.

I was a floral designer for many years. What we would do was to make up the flowers towards the end of the day on Saturday, and deliver them to the funeral home for the viewing, on Sunday. We would then request the funeral home to transfer them the next day, or if they wouldn't do that, we would ask that they kept the flowers watered and in a cool place, and we would pick them up before the Church service, and set them up, and try and replace any flowers that may have wilted.

You will likely be charged two delivery charges, but the flowers will be in both places. You can also make a personal request to the funeral home to have the flowers transferred to the cemetary if you'd like.

The funeral home moves all the flowers ( or most of them) from the funeral home at the viewings to the church for the actual funeral. It is common to send them for the visitation and they will just be moved.

I wish this were the case at all funeral homes FrChuck. Unfortunately it's not. We had many problems arise from this. Some think it's the job of the florist to do this.

It would cause of kinds of problems, from having to be at the funeral home to deliver at a time designated by the directors, to not being let into the church before the service, for us to transfer them, because the funeral home wouldn't do it. It's a sad truth, but we always did our best as florists, to help out the families, when that really should be the obligation of the funeral director.
