you can try a bleach it blonde than go from there to a darker colour

What color was it first? I had a similar problem which is how I discovered this site...
I had bleach blonde hair, I dyed it Ash blonde and it turned purple. You need a hair dye with pigments opposite of purple, like Auburn (orange). Or you could buy some Colorfix, which is kind of hard on your hair. I'm lucky to have fine hair or I would have fried it, as many times as I colored it.
