Hello,

Our A/C was running and upon returning home, I noticed an odd dry metallic or gas-like smell in the house.

When I turned the sytem off, it dissapaited, but in some of the small rooms we can still smell it - sometimes strongly - even though the system has been off for a week.

It is not real noticiable until the house is closed up for the night.

We thought perhaps a mouse died in the duct system which also needed cleaning so we had that done.

BUt, the odor remains and we have to open the windows a couple times a day.

Does any one have any ideas?

Thanks,
Sister Joy

Your A/C coil that is in the inside unit could be the problem. Many folks describe the smell as dirty socks. Have the under side of the coil checked and cleaned if necessary to help remove the odor.

great place to start. But if the smell is gaseous at all, i would have someone come in and check for a gas leak. Are you on natural gas or propane. A dead mouse can often times smell a little like propane. Also if you are on propane and your tank is old and almost empty you may get a slight smell near the furnace.
