Black splash screen during XP boot up

Question?

Does it still boot into windows?

If possible please supply as much information as to descibes your problem or question if it applys to request. Most are easy and if not supplied, they may be asked eventually depending on situation.

Im going to try the following and let you guys know if it work:

Do you have a Windows CD to try repair install ?

Make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the CD (put the CD above the HD in the boot order)
Insert the XP CD and boot to it
When you see " To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER", press ENTER
You will now see an option to repair Windows by pressing "R". Do not select this option - it will only take you to the Recovery Console which is not what we want to do. Instead, choose to continue the installation
When you see the license agreement, press F8 to agree
On the next screen make sure your current XP installation is selected and then press "R" to repair XP
At this point XP will begin to install on top of itself, replacing damaged, missing or altered system files. Follow the instructions on the remaining screens to complete the Repair Install. It will look very much like a normal (new) OS installation.
If all goes well your repaired XP installation will remain iintact, keeping your personalized settings and installed programs as they originally were. Remember, choose the second repair option, not the first.

When did this start happening?

Any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started; particularly any software or hardware that you installed or setup.

So when you boot the PC now, you just come to a blue screen?

Any messages at all?

Can you get into safe mode, if you have not tried, try to get into safe mode and do a system restore to the earliest date you can get to?

I tried to do safe mode but when I enter it gives me the same problem. I can not do system restore. It only goes to a black screen and that's it. Not sure what to do now.

To my knowledge there were no hardware or software install that might cause this problem. I do not want to do a clean install since the computer has docs and pics on the hard drive.

Remember, choose the second repair option, not the first.
Try the first repair option also

Hey Seahwk83 can I email you with another question? I fond virtumonde (trojan) on another computer (win xp home). I thought I took care of it using the Malwarebytes anti-maleware program. Instead Spy Bot Search and destroy found it and my question is should I try to fix it without doing a clean install or should I do my best and try to reslove it with your help? Thanks!!

Well my problem with Virtumonde is coming along okay. I removed it with Spybot Search & Destroy. Its seems IE is running normal right now. I uninstall Hijack This from the same computer. Is it best to leave the program on the computer or not? Same goes with Spybot, should I leave it or remove it once the computer seems to be working okay?

I would leave off spybot, many people have issues when using this, some don't but mnay do

There is no problem with leaving Hijackthis

Just keep an eye when you install new software or change hardware settings and make sure things still OK after making changes or adding software to make sure things still run smoothly before add something else
