how do i write a thank you letter to a customer for his purchase

For one thing, it doesn't have to be something that's very long. But, the format of it might depend on what it is that you sold to the customer and the outcome that you want to be achieved because of writing the note or letter.

What did you sell to the customer and what would you like to achieve by making this kind of communication, please?

Did you receive a substantial benefit from his purchase? Why are you feeling the need to write a thankyou note?
