I tried change the way I login from the ctrl+alt+del to the list of users to select but is not working. I went to the control panel and under user accounts I went to "change the way users log on or off. I selected "Use Welcome Screen and Use fast user switching" but it still come up with the ctrl+alt+del option. Is there something I am missing or a secuirty option that I have to disable?

How many accounts do you have set up? Make sure there are at least 2 and make sure each has a password, then reboot see if you get the screen you want.

What version of XP are you on?

I have four accounts including administrator and guest user. I am using XP Pro. All the accounts have passwords. I changed the interactive login to ENABLE on my gpedit.msc but it just bypassed the ctrl+alt+del phase and goes straight into entering username and password. The thing is I want to select users from a list in the login screen. Not type the username and password.

Is there any other changes in secuirty I can try.

Thanks for helping JB

This is typical for Windows XP Pro when it is joined to a workgroup or domain. Windows XP Home has the behavior your are wanting.

I have 4 computers and all my XP Pro computers (none with passwords) still make me go through the fill-in style login screen, the 2 Home computers present the "list" you want.

XP Home is your desired platform.

Thanks all for the responses. I thinks I'll change the platform to the Home edition to be mores user friendly.

I'm going to disagree with everyone else and say "poppycock". Every XP Pro machine I've ever setup defaults to the Welcome screen on a fresh install if the machine has 64+MB of RAM (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279765/en-us). I have to manually disable it to get the old username and password login.

I suggest you look for installed software that may have disabled the Welcome screen because it isn't compatible with fast user switching. Having the Novell Netware client installed (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315347/en-us), Offline files enabled, or being joined to a domain (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303594/en-us) can also prevent use of the Welcome screen.
