Can a person claim the education credits for the fees paid to a truck driving school?

i know my wife had expenses like this (not truck driving, but certification tied to business) that, i believe, were put into the training portion of tax filing and not educational expenses.

if you don't have a 1098 form you might be hesitant to claim it as a tuition expense. our daughter was overseas one semester and the money paid for that term wasn't on the 1098-e from the school. our CFA was hesitant to include that money in the school expense section unless we could back it up with a 1098.

wait for someone like atlantataxexpert to answer... they'll know. im just stating what happened to us.

Off-hand, I doubt if the truck driver school is a "qualified educational institution". If they did not produce a Form 1098-E or 1098-T, then you really cannot claim the education credits.

Atlanta Tax, I thought any education program that helps you in your occupation was deductable. I know we used to deduct alot of the classes we took ( weekend training) back as a police officer and we were told we could deduct them since they were needed ( required training) to keep our certifications

Also don't most of the truck driving schools even qualify for verterns benifits ( at least one of the schools in Nashville does according to a student I meet there last year)

do you know what form or where I could look that up. I am planning on some additional education this year.

Fr. Chuck:

I did not say they were not deductible. The trucking school could probably be written off as an employee business expense.

I said it probably did not qualify for the Education Credits
