If you file your tax return after you complete Substantial Presence Test in 2008 or 2009, you will be eligible to file joint return as residents. You will get standard deduction for both of you and exemption for all three of you. You will also get child tax credit of $1,000.

For your 2008 tax return, you must take professional help. You may contact taxexpert@<hidden>, who expertise in such returns.

Your federal income tax liability will be about $4,100, assuming that you file jointly with your wife and after the Child Tax Credit is applied.

The Social Security tax is assessed at 6.2%, and Medicare is assessed at 1.45%.

Cannot do Maryland.
