A research project purchased in 2006 for $325,000 is completed in 2007. R&D costs to complete the project are $110,000. Admin & legal exp. for patent total $16,000 with an expected useful life of 5 yrs.

Patent amortization for 2007 (full year)? $3,200

($16,000/5)= $3,200

In 2008, the company successfully defends the patent in extended litigation at a cost of $47,200, thereby extending the patent life to December 31, 2015.

Patent amortization for 2008 (full year)? $8,572

($16,000- 3,200)= $12,800
($12,800/7)= $1,829
($47,200/7)= $6,743

($1,829+6,743)= $8,572
