I have an MTD lawn tractor 660-688 series (15 horse) that I purchased in 2003. It has been great, until now. It has sat all winter in the garage and I just tried to pull it out and do the lawn for the first time. I have no neutral gear. The motor will run, I can go forward and backward, but I have no neutral (the wheels feel locked up when in neutral position, you cannot manually push or pull the tractor, and you cannot dismount the seat in neutral position without the motor quitting now).

Help--ideas?

Thanks.

the brake could be hanging. preventing the tire rotation.

No, it acts like it is in gear when in neutal. Here are the two scenes that are present:

Engine not running--shifter in neutral position, you cannot push or pull the tractor--acts like it's in gear. IF the brake was riding, I could probably be able to get the wheels to turn, but they're locked up.

Engine running--tractor goes forward and backward fine (in gear). Put the shifter in neutral and the mower won't move, but if you try to get off the seat the mower shuts down (when working correctly, I should be able to dismount the mower with the engine running, as long as it's in neutral and the parking brake set).

Any of this help?

Thanks, by the way.
