I am looking for a way to fix a problem with the display function in the control in Windows XP. I have searched all over the web for a solution. To date none of the suggestions have worked. I suspect that some spyware may have corrupted my ability to change the appearance of my display.

Thanks

Have you tried these
Restoring missing control panel icons (http://faq.arstechnica.com/link.php?i=1841)

Do display settings work at all? Right click on desktop and choose properties

Right clicking desktop does not bring up properties. The link between the icon or the desktop has been broken I think. This is a problem that Microsoft does not appear to have any answers for.

Have you considered a system restore point (not recovery) to an earlier time when there was no problem
