My wife and I are filing jointly as resident alien as we have exceeded our 5 year limit on F visa. She worked as a TA at her school and was paid teaching assistanship (tax withheld). We paid for her tuition (Box 2 of 1098-T) using both the stipend she earned via TA and from our own fund. In this case, can we claim for education credit for the total amount shown in Box 2 of 1098-T or should we claim only for the amount that we paid from our own fund (ie., Box 2 minus stipend from TAship).

Hope someone can help us!!

Thanks

You may be able to get Tuition and fees deduction of up to $4000 as adjustment to income on Form 1040, line 34 or 1040A, line 19. For this you need to do Form 8917 (Tuition and Fees Deduction). Complete Form 8917 to see if you qualify for the deduction.
