((Soon all energy will be sold by the therm so it will make no difference what you use for heating)0
Most energy today is already priced per therm or you can convert it over. The real trick will happen in just a few years since almost all utilities have been working to remove themselves from the control of the state regulators.
This has happened in many states including a neighbor state of Ohio.
How we are being hood winked?
The main area suppliers of both gas and electric are convincing the state regulator boards that competitive pricing will lower the cost for the citizens of the state. They offer the fact that competition from other companies will allow for better and cheaper raw utility service rates or cost per therm. (not including delivery, line care, service, billing, meter reading, etc.)
When the state regulators take the bait and are no longer in control the utilities start to play games with all the additional costs as mentioned above to help lock in even more profit. When doing calculations it is done in net cost per therm for both gas and electric since if you do not use the original area utility you have to calculate in all the extras (see above).
Now that we have left the major profit making out of the bag many regulators are trying to figure how to get all of this mess back in the bag and so far no one can seem to do it so we as consumers are stuck with the outcome. Bigger utility bills!
As a presiding chair every three months at the meeting this is always rehashed over and over. When the utilities rep keep talking about the cost per therm and how this will blend in the various areas of utility management it just all seems to fall in place. People want to be treated fairly weather they are on gas or electric with propane and oil following on there coat tails. It just stands to reason that all forms of energy will be per therm so the calculating mess will go away. This is the common denominator they are all looking for.
