I most recently was released from a N.Y. prison after serving 12 years for bank robbery and to be honest, I am lost out here. So much has changed, especially technology. Also, having a hard time obtaining a drivers license because of lack of I.D. which is the reason I'm trying to get a drivers license. There are numerous organization willing to help, but I am unable to travel to these places, due to lack of transportation and not allowed to drive legally. If anyone can give me insight on how to proceed, please do so. I am 46 years old with above average intelligence and have numerous job skills.

Well basically often your prison ID is a state issued ID and was at one time proper identification. But you will have to if they don't allow this, get a copy of your birth certificate and social security card. After that you will need some form of proof of residence.

If you are in a major city area, you will have the advantage of mass transportation. Of course since you have had TV you would have keep up with events and even products just not up perhaps on their perosnal use.
But over all it is going to be issues of just dealing with your freedom.

Hello tommy:

Yeah, I know what you mean. I had great plans for my first day out, but I actually hid in a motel for a week. It was really scary out there. The cars were moving too fast, and I swear everybody who looked at me KNEW that I was just released...

The only advice I can offer, is don't let the little things allow you to succumb. Don't drive if you don't have a license. Don't take the short cuts. They WILL throw you right back in.

The technology stuff?? Yeah, it's passed me by too, and I'm OUT here.

Yes, this is a very hard fact, I wish there were more programs to help people adjust from prison life back into society. We have a couple programs locally but they are limited. Far to often here in GA we give them a bus ticket back home and a check for alitle over 100 dollars. They have to spend about 4 bucks to cash the check at the bus depo.

So after a meal, a soda and a snak for the bus trip, they walk off the bus at some city with less than 100 dollars and told not to do anything wrong.
