Before you wash your dishes do this:

Turn on the kitchen hot water faucet. Let it run until you get hot water. Now fill the dish washer with hot water. If you don't let it run until hot, your dish washer will start filling with cold water. The waters got to get up to temperature.

If you have soft water you only need a half a cup of soap.

Utensils. Put these in the basket face up. Do not put all forks together, or all spoons together, or all knives. Steak knives the point goes down. If you do they won't get really clean. They'll just nestle up against another.

You can add your soap powder, and then 1 tbsp of tang orange flavored drink mix. This will keep the dishes from spotting.
