Ummm contrary to popular belief... the hymen is a part of the vulva. It is a covering of the vaginal opening. You can see it if you have a mirror handy (as it is located externally). Also.... If you are able to have a period where blood actually escapes the vagina - it is partially missing. Most women lose their hymen (at least partially) long before they attempt sexual intercourse. There are usually some remnants of the hymen until it leaves you completely once you give birth vaginally.

If there is not an intact hymen, this does not mean that the woman is not a virgin. Some gals are born without one, sports such as horseback riding or bicycling can rupture the hymen also.
