clafairey Feb 9, 2008, 09:01 AM Whenever I start drinking alcohol, I don't want to stop until i've finished everything off, and if I could get more I probably would. I hate this feeling. When i'm not drinking, I am fine and don't feel any need to drink alcohol, but when I actually start, or we plan to go out and drink, I don't want it to end.
I don't feel I have enough confidence to dance, socialise and actually have a good time when out at clubs or pubs, unless I am drinking. I used to have a drug problem also, taking Ecstasy and/or speed when I was out at clubs. If I didn't have any, I would end up having a boring night and get totally drunk instead.
I haven't done either of these drugs for around 6 month now and don't intend to either. The alcohol thing is really getting me down though. I like to go out and have a drink, just have a laugh. But sometimes it's like it takes over. Am I an alcoholic? I don't drink very often at all, 2 or 3 times a month maybe, it depends. But when I do drink, I really go for it and hate myself for it the next day.
I wish I didn't feel these urges to want to drink more, anyone have any ideas/suggestions as to what I should do? Or anything on this topic at all?
Thanks
Claire
twinkiedooter Feb 9, 2008, 12:24 PM What you have described is what's called a one drink drunk. You can't stop until it is all gone. This is quite typical of an alcoholic. There are every day alcoholics, weekend alcoholics, one a month binge alcoholics, every 6 month alcoholics. The fact you take just one drink and want to drink everything up is a very good indication you have an alcohol addiction.
Do not ever mix Esctacy with alcohol. Escatcy will literally fry your brain as it is being deprived of water. Alcohol will dry out your system regardless of how much you drink. The combo of Esctacy and alcohol is nothing short of suicide to take together. Once your body goes into a dehydrated condition it can die and die very quickly.
You should go to your local AA meetings and hear how each person has dealt with alcohol themselves and you'll find someone at that meeting who has the same problem you do "one drink" and I'm off and running.
It's nothing to be ashamed of as you are smart enough to have put two and two together and figured out you have a problem. Just take it one day at a time and you'll be able to get a handle on your cravings once you know how to successfully fight them off.
clafairey Feb 9, 2008, 12:30 PM Never heard of that before, thanks. I know it's dangerous to drink alcohol and take ecstasy at the same time, but I didn't care all those times I did it. Thanks to my girlfriend helping me stop the drugs, although it took a lot of time. I used to resent her for it and for telling me how much to drink. I sometimes get annoyed at her when we drink and she all of a sudden tells me to stop. I don't want to be like this. It makes me a nasty person.
My parents are alcoholics, when they have money to buy it. I always said I would never be like them, I don't want to be. Makes me so angry.
wewed100606 Feb 9, 2008, 12:30 PM Alot of times I think my wife feels this way. She is a go out and close the bar down then find the after bar party kinda girl. Doesn't do it often, but when she does it, she does it. The best answer is probably to not drink, but with my wife I know that is like asking to stick clamps on her nipples. I would say find a responsible drinking buddy who will be sure to cut you off, or remain sober enough to care for you when you hit the wall. That is kinda the role I have taken on with my wife...and really it doesn't bother me at all...unless she is mean to me when she is drunk...then I feel unappreciated. Love her to death though...just find something that works for you and makes you feel safe when going out.
clafairey Feb 9, 2008, 12:34 PM My girlfriend takes the role that you are in, I just wish she didn't have to. Sometimes she has gotten very drunk and I don't deny her of this, but I sometimes think maybe she drinks more so that she doesn't have to put up with me if I turn nasty. I don't want to stop drinking, maybe if I had the confidence to dance and socialise in public then I might cut down. I don't know. I like the "don't care" feeling that I get from drinking, like I can make a fool of myself on the dance floor and not care what people think. Thank you for your comments!
wewed100606 Feb 9, 2008, 12:39 PM You should get together and party with my wife! You guys would be a hoot!
You sound like a smart girl...I am sure you will come up with a solution...just get out there and shake that a**! You know most of the people there are as drunk as you usually get and won't remember anyways!
Have you thought about pre-paying your tab and not bringing any more $$$ so you can't afford anymore booze? That way you cut yourself off.
Have you ever been out stone cold sober before? It is actually just as fun and entertaining as being faced. It is just that in between stage when you are buzzin' and you could go either way that sucks ;-)
clafairey Feb 9, 2008, 12:45 PM lol i'm sure it would be a laugh. I have been out sober before, just to pubs and what not, I found it quite boring to be honest.lol I think it's probably because I have been going out for so long always to drink/do drugs in the past, and I know nothing different, anything different sounds boring to me. Set in my ways really with that one.lol Kind of too used to thngs being like that, maybe i'm scared of anything different. Not sure
twinkiedooter Feb 9, 2008, 01:02 PM Generally if a person does not drink alcohol bars ARE boring places to be. I don't go to bars (never did) and I would find fun at other places. You sound young and over in the UK there aren't too many places to go to dance and have fun except bars. The fact you have a gf who has taken you under her wing and tries to help you limit your drinking is wonderful. She is a true, blue friend indeed and you should be very grateful for her.
Just try and keep staying away from that first drink and you'll do okay. Don't worry about how uptight you are about dancing, etc. as let's face it, the guys are drunk and they probably wouldn't notice if you had two left feet when dancing LOL. Remember, you are the one who is in control of you.
clafairey Feb 9, 2008, 01:05 PM I'm 23 years old. I guess it depends on what ages you class as young. A true, blue friend? I haven't heard that expression before?
twinkiedooter Feb 9, 2008, 02:00 PM I guess it must be an American slang. We use it a lot over here. And yes, I do think you are young at age 23. Heck, anyone under the age of 30 I consider young. You still are growing up socially and getting into the swing of things. So take your time - you'll find your Mr. Right soon enough.
clafairey Feb 10, 2008, 03:16 AM Find my mr right soon enough? I have found my Mrs right.lol When I say girlfriend I mean partner, sorry I know some people see "girlfriend" as meaning just a good female friend. I went out lastnight with a group of friends, none of us drank. I wanted to but I didn't. I didn't like being out and not being able to drink so I could come out of my little shell, I wanted to leave asap. I spoke to my girlfriend about it when we got back, we decided it best for me to wait until I have my counsellor so I can try and sort myself out.
By the way, this has nothing to do with my post, sorry. But does anyone know why my display picture keeps changing it's self back to "Troll Alert High?" I have changed it loads of times to a picture of me, but it keeps going back to this?
lovelesspa Feb 14, 2008, 06:53 PM From the sounds of it, you have a problem, even if your only drinking once a month if you can't control yourself, you may be an alcoholic. SO the next question is what are you going to do, I would advise, knowing my limitations, and not drinking at all. You can go out and party, just leave the alcohol out of it. And the drug your talking about is simply a brain fryer, your too young to need something to" make " you horny, aren't you? Please, if nothing else, stay away from these drugs, and check out some help sites to look over what might be a bad problem for you...alcohol....
clafairey Feb 15, 2008, 03:30 AM I don't do e or speed anymore, just alcohol. Too youing for something to make me horny? Horny means sexually aroused in the uk. I'll assume you are from elsewhere and there it means happy or something? I don't know. Anyhow, yeah, I am going to be doing an alcohol awareness training course, might help in some way.
lovelesspa Feb 20, 2008, 02:42 PM Well, I'm from the states, your right and they have drugs here that make you horny sorry for the mistake, But please check out and take serious the alcohol awareness program, your top young to ruin everything and mess us your future, and I mean that no matter what our distance is.,
clafairey Feb 22, 2008, 12:16 AM There are drugs that make you horny here too, but these weren't the desired effects that I so wanted when I took drugs. Sorry if I worded my question/any of my answers wrong. I have an opportunity coming up soon to do an alcohol awareness course so I will be putting myself on that. Thanks for the posts everyone :)
simoneaugie Feb 22, 2008, 01:06 AM I used to think that I would be bored without alcohol. That's a great way to distract/distance yourself from the real problem. Alcoholism is a hereditary disease. If you hate the way your parents are, it's time to face the reality that alcohol will probably always be an issue for you. Whenever you let it into your body, it (addiction) takes over your thought processes. That's why you get mean, the alcohol is demanding more, more, more. Sick and disappointing, but true.
