I lived and worked in Minnesota from jan to july of 2007 and lived in Wisconsin from july 2007 until current and also worked in MN and WI. What do I do about filing my taxes, I didn't make very much and don't want to pay to have someone do my taxes. I hear WI tax laws are very much different than MN. Can anyone help me? Thank You Toni

You will have to file part-year income tax forms for both WI and MN. Each will tax you on earnings you made while a resident of their state. It can get a little more complicated if you continued to earn money in MN after moving to WI (or conversely, made money in MN before changing residences to WI) - in that case you'd have to file non-resident tax forms for the period of the overlap. Also, if you have other sources of income - interest, dividends, capital gains, etc. - you will have to determine which portion of each is attributable to the time you lived in each state. The state tax forms are pretty straight-forward about how to file for part-year residency. TurboTax can walk you through the details, although you will have to buy the state income tax modules for both MN and WI.

Toni:

Ebaines advice is valid, but in order to work it through TurboTax, yo would have to BUY the TurboTax federal program plus each of the state programs.

The basic TurboTax is free (though efiling is NOT free), but I guarantee that the state programs WILL cos you something, probably $30 each.

If you have a basic tax return (Form 1040EZ), your local tax professional will not charge you MUCH more than $60 to do your return PLUS both state returns.

The proper filing of multiple state returns CAN be a problem for the layman, but a experienced tax professional will have NO problem at all doing it right.

If you want, I could probably help you out. Send me a Private Message with your details and I'll quote you a fee.
