Hi,
Both me and my wife are Indian students in F1 visa. I just enquired to know whetheer if we are filing separately we can claim personal exemption apart from standard deduction. Again can we show some loss due to vandalism & expenses incurred for paying tuition fees can also be shown in some deductions?

You should both file separate tax returns as nonresidents. Both of you will get standard deduction and exemption deductions that $8,750 each.

Vandalism expenses is covered under casualty and theft loss. For this loss you must first use $100 and 10% of AGI rules. Then you can deduct the remaining loss only if you itemize your deductions.

You can deduct tuition fees paid up to $4,000 as adjustment to the income.

Sorry, but tuition credits/deductions are NOT available to those who file as non-resident aliens.

They CAN deduct student loan interest, though!
