in a state

So a month ago I met a guy,he came up to me and said my name,I had no idea who he was.he told me we have a mutual friend and that's how he found out things about me.
He flirted and asked for my number cause he wants to see me.
In my mind I kept comparing him to my ex,very wrong I know, anyway.I didn't give him my number and told him to 'work for it'.
He doesn't really impress me in any way and I found his flirting insincere/cheesy... it flattered me but that's it.
Today I met our mutual friend and she told me she met him a few days ago and gave him the number.he said he wants to take me to dinner and that he's very fond of me.she knows him for about a year, and she believes he's quite a catch and I should give it a try.
Problem is I have a crush on one of his friends, who also happens to be friends with my ex as well.and he's the only one I'm interested in.I think he likes me too,and I know for sure I'll see him soon at a party, when I was planning to make a move .
My question is,if the guy will call to ask me out until the party, how to politely refuse?
I mean,I really am not in the mood for getting to know HIM,but wouldn't refuse his friend...
How nasty is that.I don't want to hurt his feelings(if they are true) or his ego.
I can't go out with him because then I'd never find out if I had a chance with his friend.
It's complicated because like I said before, his friend is also friends with my ex,and he might reject me because it might bother either one of them.
I don't want to get between them,I don't want to be unfair,I just want to be happy.what should I do?
