this is the balance sheet:

the design to the manufacturing stage

April 1999 Research aimed at modifying the design $43.000
July 2003 Legal fees paid in unsuccessful patent
infringement suit against a competitor $34.000

Assumed it has a useful life of 17 yeras when it received the initial patent. On Jan 1, 2001, it revised its useful life estimat downward to 5 remainging years. Amortization is computed for a full year if the cost is incurred prior to July 1, and no amortization for the year if the cost is incurred after June, 30. The company years end is Dec 31.
