Heater does not go on after switching on the thermostat to heat. Only hitting the top of the heater firmly will it to go on. Any thoughts why it's not going on as it should from the thermostat controls?

Sounds like a loose connection if you ahve to hit it to make it come on. I would look for a loose wire.
