The forced hot air gas furnace in my home is located in the basement. Unfortunately it is also located in my workshop. I am planning to expand my shop by building a wall from the back to the front of the house. By doing this the furnace will be outside of my shop. The wall would be parallel to the front of the furnace and I am allowing a 34" space between them. The side of the furnace opposite the air return duct would be 24" from the stairwell leading upstairs and open to the rest of the basement. Is this enough air space around the furnace?

I dont see a problem with it as long as it gets fresh air to burn. But I have yet to see a city code pass it if the furnace is under the stairwell.

The furnace is not under the stairwell, it is 24" from the outside of the stairwell.
