how many wires does 220 central air have going to the copressor unit outside

Two line wires and a ground wire.

There COULD be 2 circuits going to the disconnect. if you had an AC disconnect with an integral 120 VAC GFCI recepticle. One being 220 and the other 120 V.

Usually L1, L2 and GND are required for the compressor.
