In writing only month and year - July 1997 - do you place a comma after the month or not?

No you do not use a comma if writing July 1997. Now if you are talking about specific dates, such as, oh I don't know, the 20th, you would write July 20, 1997.

But just the month and year, no you don't use a comma.
