Years ago I use to buy the 50 lb bag of Sunflower seed and 20 lb of thistle seed for the Finches along with the finch feeder tubes. Now Finch food usually is .99 cent a lb. Now what I do is I got rid of the Finch feeder tubes. I put 1 50lb bag of Sunflower seed in a metal trash can and I buy 2 lb of Thistle seed that I pour over the Sunflower seed and mix in. I use regular bird feeders and the Finches know that the Thistle is there. I have just as many Golden Finches that I had before without the added expense. I can do without the extra 18 lb of Thistle seed.

Sunflower seeds are great for many uses! Sunflower seeds can be eaten roasted and salted as a snack, or baked in breads and biscuits, or used as a tasty garnish for salads. As well as being delicious, they also provide a wealth of nutrition and energy. Sunflower seeds are 25 percent protein, making them higher in protein than grains. Sunflower seeds are a good source of vitamin E, as well as magnesium and selenium, For people with high blood pressure, sunflower seeds are a good choice because they are very high in potassium but low in sodium, a balance sorely needed in the snack-food industry. Substituting sunflower seed oil for butter and shortening when cooking is a move in the right direction.

I'm using Black oil Sunflower seeds strictly for birds, not to good for human consumption. Yea! I use to eat the hell out of the salted sunflower seeds.

I like the ranch kind and seeds on salads are excellent , I have also tried pickled and barq flavored . A bag of seeds and a baseball game, can't beat it! but be careful to to many can add a lot of fat to your diet, but a good source for meat replacement. Tom a good idea in the money saving tip, my neighbor feeds all types of birds I will relay this idea to her. :)
