Why is sex so important when it can spread different diseases?

Anything can be dangerous when used in an improper way, not just sex.

It is how we reproduce. For those married, it is a way to express love to each other.

Also while it is a way to spread it, if done only with the person you marry, then it is not a way to spread it.

Not washing your hands then handling food is also a way to spread disease

Can you really say FOOD isn't important?

    Your question makes no sense.

Sex is the way the human species procreates; it is a strong innate *drive* in both men and women, consciously and sub consciously. :) Males are driven to try to inseminate as many women as he can in the prime of his young life.

That is why sex is so biologically important.

There are diseases associated with all human systems... skin, digestive, immune, brain and nervous system, skeletal, and so on. There is no doubt in my mind that oral sex, prostitution(male and female), and anal sex have contributed to sexual diseases and the spread of diseases.

Well if it weren't for sex you wouldn't have asked this question, as you wouldn't be here.

I don't think it's a dumb question at all... you know procreation is vital for the species, and diseases that can make you ill seem to make that mechanism less than "optimal"...

But as mentioned, you can get illness many other ways. How many people will die from pneumonia or the flu? Does that mean the nose and sneezing are bad designs?

Think about it from the "disease" agent "point of view"... granted, there's no grand mental "plan" that a virus or bacterium has to take over the world... but the agent is using you... using a process that is common to propagate and spread itself.

Sucks for the human who gets the std. but for the agent of the disease, its mission accomplished... a new host, and potentially others along the way.

So stds don't fit well into the id-like-to-have-disease-free-sex-guaranteed wish... but they make some "sense" in terms of an infectious agent trying to "procreate" itself through a process that is common and introduces new hosts into the mix.

I understand about reproducing. But the fact is, people are not having sex with other people everyday just to reproduce.

Well... you technically eat to provide your body with essential nutrients, but you can also eat for pleasure. That ice cream sundae isn't exactly all about fuel for the body. So... doing something the body naturally desires for emotional reasons isn't limited to sex.

Even if people aren't trying to have a child each time they have sex, doesn't it make sense that there is a primal drive that increases the frequency of sex, and therefore increases the possibility of reproduction?

Sex is great when done correctly and safely (although there really is no such thing as 100% safe sex). Sex is a gift, when it's with the right person then it's magical, a way to show your love for one another. And I agree with Tal, it's sooooooo good. :)
