If you are getting close enough to smell him, then you should also be at a point in the relationship to be open with your feelings. Perhaps don't go down there anymore and he'll get the hint.
There is always making washing his genitalia part of the fun. If he wants to know why, you can be honest about the smell and that this seemed like a good way to take care of the problem while also getting some more play in.
I don't think he would take it to heart. I have never been told this but if i was told so I would take much better care of them and wash them to avoid the situation again in the future. Especially if he is a guy who enjoys head.
