It is the peroneum (sp) and it should be cut by the doctor during delivery.

Basically it is. There is some smooth muscle underneath, but it does not really do much.

As I said there is smooth muscle below. The area you are speaking of is skin. It separates the vaginal area from the rectal area.

Again, why? If I knew the reason for your question I may be able to answer better.

Cutting during delivery is not what should happen at all. The vagina should ideally stretch enough for the baby. Cutting is not the preferred option.

I believe that J-9 meant that as a precaution if it looks like it will rip the doctor will cut it. That it is a better option then letting it rip

Yes, Tuscany is right. It is the preferred option if the peroneal area will not stretch on it's own. Stitching and healing is much more dangerous and difficult if the area is ripped.

The peroneal area refers to both men and women in the medical field, just an FYI.

"Cutting" is called an episiotomy. Stretching, especially with the first child, is not always possible. The vaginal canal does stretch but the outside, perineal area does not always.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand, it is the peroneal (sp) area in both sexes. Believe me, I have done enough peroneal care this past fall, on both men and women, to last me a lifetime.

It should not rip if you have a good doctor. That is what the episiotomy is for.
