I gave my 16 year old daughter a urine drug test to test for illicit drug use (mainly marijana). I watched her deposit the urine into the cup to make sure she did not dilute the urine. The urine was white and clear. It had no yellow tint and did NOT smell like urine.
What would cause the urine to be colorless and have no odor? The test results for illicit drug use were negative but I was suspicious of alcohol consumption. She did not act drunk at all but I thought I detected a very slight alcohol odor.
She insists that the urine was colorless and odorless because she had been drinking so much water. If there was alcohol in the urine would that cause a false reading for the drug test? Also, what would cause her urine to be both colorless and odorless?

Actually urine should be colorless and odorless if the person urinating has consumed a sufficient amount of fluids. Yellow urine with a detectable odor indicates insufficient fluid intake. It's possible that she drank excess fluids in anticipation of this test hoping to skew the results but that's in vain as drinking excess water will not erase traces of drugs in the urine and will not lead to a false negative.

I agree with the previous post. My urine is usually colorless and odorless, or just has a slight yellow tint. (Too much info, I know :) ) When I went to the doctor and gave a urine sample not that long ago, they told me that it was healthy. The doc. Said that if you are drinking enough water, it will be dilute like that. I don't think alcohol would cause a false negative.

If you are really worried, then maybe you could take her to the doctor and ask for a blood test for drugs and alcohol. My friend gets drug-tested at his work. They use a hair follicle drug test, he said it was because it goes back farther. Maybe that would be an option. I don't know if that is something they can do at the doctor or not. Good for you for making sure your child is drug-free!

May I ask why you administered the test to your daughter?

I would assume she has given you reason to worry about drug use and/or alcohol consumption. There are other signs to look for instead of the test (if your unsure about the results). It may be best to observe her behaviour for a couple of days/weeks before administering a urine test. I say that because if there is a problem then the person using the drug will alter his/her use to get around the test, she knows you will give her the test randomly and so she will change her pattern of use.

That's only if there is a problem, not if you just being protective.

I agree with the others. Coloring in urine can be a result of things like too much vitamin B and not enough fluids.
