R & D cost . I'm lost

What are reasons FOR or AGAINST capitalizing R & D (Research and Development) cost?

I have to basically choose which side to take and give reasons.

Honestly, I'm totally lost.

I would really appreciate some help.
THANK YOU.

Isn't there specific requirements for capitilizing R&D or expensing it. I thought if they have no furture use they must be expensed.
