Squirrel in ceiling and walls of my mobile home
 I have squirels in my ceiling and walls of my mobile home
I hear them at night. They make a lot of noise gnawing. They run back and forth in the ceiling. I am so afraid that they are going to cause a fire. I read a lot of posts and the answers aren't really specific to my problem. How can I check this out? It's not like an attic where you can see what's going on. It is just a few inches from the ceiling to the roof. I hear them in the bedroom walls. Some of the posts from other sites said to make sure the squirrel or squirrels don't have babies before trapping etc. How can I check that out? I appreciate any advice. Thanks.:)

Are you sure the critters you hear at night are squirrels? Most species of squirrels found in North America are not nocturnal. I've run across similar cases of noise (at night, usually) in the walls and ceiling of mobile homes and in most cases... the cause was mice, rats or birds. In a few cases, the animal causing the noise wasn't even inside the structure but was on the roof. Mobile home walls and ceilings are pretty thin and the space that does exist inside is stuffed full of insulation. It's very unlikely an animal would be able to move through a wall or ceiling space for more than 1'-2' in any direction due to the wooden studs (or ribs) that are inside that space.

I certainly don't intend to tell you that what you hear isn't there, but from my experience in trying to identify the "suspect critter" and their location... I've discovered that sounds in a mobile home can be deceiving... what sounds like noises coming from the bedroom can be a tree rubbing against the other end of the home.

Check your skirting, roof and exterior walls for any gaps (even small ones.. don't forget under the entry stairs)... Good luck.

I have always heard the squirrels running back and forth on the roof. They use it like a freeway. LOL I've always felt the squirrels were outside on the roof until lately. The walls are a different story. There is definitely something in the walls of my bedroom. The loud scrambling and gnawing noise led me to believe that it had to be something much larger than a mouse. I do have a mouse problem here. The mice did make some noise before. I could hear them once in awhile chewing or scurrying about but it wasn't that loud. When I hear the chewing noises I bang on the walls where they are and they stop for a few seconds and start up again. I have been looking for their entry ways. I have the humane traps. Have trapped quite a few of them. There is no way that I can kill anything. This summer I have to crack down and really try to seal up everything. On trapping, I am afraid I will trap the mothers and their offspring will be left to die somewhere. I have to trap them and move them someplace else. The problem with that is. I will catch one at like 12 pm when I am too tired to do anything but take them outside and release them.
