What foods/meds can cause a high creatine level in my blood?
Hi: My doctor says I have a high level of creatine ( not sure of spelling) in blood. Before I undergo a bunch of expensive tests, I though I might be taking something that caused the elevated level. I noted that you said there are about 40 different things that can cause it to be high. I also seem to have foam in my urine; don't know if it's related or not. Thanks for any information you can give me.

Thank you for this information. I did ask my doctor, of course, but she said the levels were higher than normal and I may need to go to a specialist. I asked her if there were things that maybe I was taking such as food or medication and she said ibuprofen was one of them which I was taking every day. I stopped taking that and she said there was a small improvement.

I still would like to know what food/meds I might be taking, and if they could cause the creatinine levels to go higher. It was stated previously that there are about 40 different meds/foods that can cause it to be higher. Thank you.

If you would tell me what medications you are taking I might be able to help better.
How is your diet? Meats and raw fish tend to increase creatinine levels.

You might want to have your lithium levels checked to make sure they are in a therapeutic range. Lithium can, and does, increase serum creatinine when there is too much in your system.

Avapro. She recently took me off that though because my blood pressure was normal. I don't think she took me off until after the test though.

My cholesterol med is Crestor. She does check my lithium levels every 3 months. Not sure what I am eating differently that could possibly be causing it. At the time I am unemployed but I guess I will let her set up a i.v. pyelogram instead of the more expensive cat scan when I am able to get a job.

If you have foamy urine, there is a good chance you are spilling protein into your urine. This is called proteinuria. A simple dipstick test of your urine can check this. If it is high, your doctor may want to order a 24 hour urine collection test and have it tested for the total amount of protein loss within a 24 hour period. Also have your doctor check your protein/creatinine ratio. This compares both protein in urine with creatinine levels. NSAIDS (like ibuprophen) caused kidney disease for me. I was taking prescription medication for arthritis and it damaged my kidneys.
