My understanding is that they can, and it's best to contact them first to work out a repayment plan, something that others have been able to do. They will ordinarily take a % each month depending on what you get and what you owe.

It actually does work (I hear) if you are apologetic and willing to pay and can convince them that it was innocent and not deceit.
