Can I run 400 amps with two 200 amp boxes?
I want to run 400 amp service in my new home and I was wondering if it is possible to run two separate 200 amp boxes instead of 1 400 amp with is much more expensive. If so do I need a main 400 amp lug or can I use the two separate 200 amp mains?

Sure, you will need a 320 amp meter socket with two 200 amp breakers to feed the 2 200 amp panels.

TK... thanks for the reply. Do you know where I can get a detailed wiring diagram either online or in book form? Most home electrical books do not get into this type of wiring. Thanks

I need to see how the meter socket is wired to the two panels. I have wired several panels and have done much remodeling over the years but I have never run two boxes like this and I have had no experience with wiring a meter socket. If I can just see how it is wired I should have no problem. Thanks!

You will have to use (2) 200 panels inside the house and use a double lug meter base outside. The reason that's is because your power company will only hit the meter base 1 time. What you will have to do is run 4 ought aluminum (4 wire) from each 200 amp panel inside the house.Just tell them at your supply house that you need a 400 amp meter base.Let me know if this helps.

See page 38 of the Milbank catalog for a typical 320 amp meter that has two 200 amp breakers, each to feed a 200 amp panel.

Hard to find a wiring diagram as this is very basic, two hots from each breaker to a panel, along with the neutral and equipment ground. All you need to do is know how to wire one panel, times two.

The previous answer, suggesting a 400 amp meter is incorrect. These meters will all be rated 320 amp.

You can use #4/0 SER Aluminum cable, which will have two 4/0 for the hots, one 4/0 for the neutral, and one #2/0, see page 3 of the Alcan catalog, and read the manufacturers instructions.

If you use PVC conduit you can use 2" with 3 # 2/0 Copper and 1 #4 copper for the equipment ground.
