    Hi, All!

I know that I didn't give very good examples in the title. But, I'm sure that you know what I mean.

So, what are they called, please?

    Thanks!

    Emoticons, or smilies.

    No other names, hheath541?

I'm always somewhat behind in computer lingo. But, emoticons and smilies to me would seem to be those that are colorful and actually seem to represent a face.

But, maybe what I'm using in my title though, is a primitive form of them...

    Thanks!

Those are actually how you type out the emoticons that become the colorful little smiley faces. Years before they thought to turn them into gifs that's what they looked like. Many forum sites and every instant messenger I'm familiar with instantly converts them when you type them out. If you have an instant messenger you can try it out.

oh, I should specify that only the 'sideways' smilies translate into gifs. The horizontal ones (^_^, >_<, *_*, etc) don't.

A lot of it is up to users, opinon and such. They can rather self explainatory if rerred to with verbal context in sms/txt/IM protocols.:D
